USA - Elgin, IL

Elgin is an exciting community in which to work. Needs abound, but so do opportunities to work together with Jesus to see lives and the community transformed by the power of God.

Overview

We have two full time field staff and many multi-ethnic, local volunteers who work together to reflect Jesus and see transformation take place in Elgin, a small city to the west of Chicago.

We focus in three strategic areas:

Homeless

At this time there is the homeless breakfast which runs every weekday from seven to eight am. We lead Bible studies on a regular basis at Wayside Center (a day room for the homeless). Court advocacy is another part of our ministry. From time to time we go to court and work to get candidates into a rehab program. We also serve as prison chaplains to our homeless friends when they are in jail.

Students

We have been invited into a local grade school to help with at-risk kids. We help the teacher in the classroom. We have also been involved in an afterschool program to provide alternatives to more dangerous activities.

Youth Program

We are helping a local church run their youth program.

ENTER

When we enter a community, we seek to relate to and understand the community through the eyes of Jesus. This includes pre-training and ongoing on-field research.

EVALUATE and ENGAGE

We repeat a collaborative cycle that aims to work alongside others in the community to identify and assess both needs and resources. Alongside the community, we encourage initiatives guided by a strategy and help implement them.

EXPAND

As transformation takes hold in a community our role changes. We avoid creating unhealthy dependencies and focus on what Jesus is doing within the community. This typically leads to expansion as transformation impacts surrounding communities.
